Up around Oceanside the Bass bites and can be pretty good If you can find some areas of kelp stringers in good looking water. Best bet above the harbor is up around the Barn Kelp and Yellowtail kelp area and below the harbor try working kelp stringers between Leucadia and Solana beach.

There have been a few Yellowtail holding on kelp paddies 4 to 7 miles of the coast, best area has been down outside of the stretch between Torrey Pines and Encinitas. Also look for spots of breezing Yellowtail, Bonito and a few Barracuda working bird schools 4 to 6 miles outside of the deep water canyon above La Jolla and outside of Torrey Pines but I did not hear of anyone fishing this area the past two days.

Captain Joe Cacciola of the charter boat Sea Star out of Helgren's in Oceanside reports that iff you meter fish deep under the kelp paddies a key method has been to use yo-yo iron fished deep or else a sardine fished deep with a sinker.  Try the Iron Man # 5's in blue and white or blue and chrome for the yo-yo iron.

Today's fishing out of Helgren's saw 91 anglers on 6 trips catch 90 Albacore, 32 Yellowtail, 55 Bonito, 9 Whitefish, 9 White Croaker, 84 Sand Bass, 87 Calico bass, 32 Yellowtail.

The surface fishing at the kelp beds at La Jolla has been producing a few Barracuda and Bass down around Southwest at the Lower End but the better bite has developed down at the Point Loma kelp for Barracuda and Calico Bass and many of the Mission Bay boats have chosen to fish the Point Loma Kelp the past few days.

Check the kelp beds at Point Loma around the Lab and Green tank and fish right along the edges of the kelp. The other area producing some occasional Barracuda action is the Whistler Buoy at Point Loma.

Use sardines for the Calicos and fish them right in the kelp. Use Sardines and iron for the Barracuda. A good choice would be the Tady 45's in blue and white or Sardine color.

Coronado Islands

The best Yellowtail fishing has been around the Coronados and between Point Loma and the Coronados. That was the case again today. The 1/2 day trips out of Point Loma and the 3/4 day trips out of both Point Loma and Mission Bay have been fishing the Yellows176 to 190 degrees from Point Loma. There are also good numbers of Yellows at the Middle Grounds but the seals have been making it tough to fish there.

Most of the action has been coming from spots of breezing fish being marked by diving white Terns. The Yellows seem to be focused on the small baits and it's often tough to get them to bite. The skippers report that the best groups of biters are the ones you find that are working red crabs The best bet is to cast jigs and sardines right to the breezing fish as you slide alongside them and get ready to get your bait or jig in the water right away as most of the strikes are happening when you first slide to a stop alongside the breezing fish. The spots of fish spook easily so approach them carefully.

Another good technique for a private boater might also be to try slow trolling nose hooked Sardines around 2 knots.

Tady 45's in blue and white or Sardine colors are steady producers for surface iron. If you can't get the surface iron right to the breaking fish you are better off with the yo-yo iron or the Sardines. Try the Salas 6X Jr's for yo-yo iron in blue and white, blue and chrome or Scrambled egg colors. Troll the Rapalas around while looking for the meter marks kelp paddies and breezing fish to stop on and work with bait and Jigs.

If you are trollinq try the Size CD 14 and CD18 Rapalas in the blue or green mackerel finishes as well as the natural color cedar plugs.

Today's local fishing out of Mission Bay saw Seaforth with 82 anglers on 2 3/4 day trips take 44 Yellowtail, 1 Mako, 8 Calico Bass, 6 Sand Bass and 2 Bonito. 66 anglers on three 1/2 day trips took 36 Barracuda, 76 Calico bass, 17 Rockfish and 2 Sand Bass.

Islandia had 12 anglers on 13/4 day trip take 59 yellowtail and 2 Bonito. They had 2 1/2 day trips with 36 anglers take 11 Barracuda, 76 Calico Bass, 2 Sand Bass,19 Rockfish and 1 Halibut. The Dolphin II was on an overnight trip and had 15 anglers take 75 Yellowtail and 30 Barracuda.

The Point Loma out of Point Loma Sportfishing had 26 anglers on a 3/4 day trip take 48 Yellowtail and 1 Calico Bass. The Daily Double out ot Point Loma Sportfishing had 26 anglers on a morning 1/2 day trip catch 33 Yellowtail and 1 Bonito. The afternoon trip fished the kelp beds and had 16 anglers take 24 Calico Bass, 8 Rockfish, 14 Barracuda and 1 White Seabass.

A 3/4 day trip on the Malihini out of H&M Landing had 32 anglers take 59 Yellowtail and 1 Bonito. The Fisherman III out of H&M Landing had 20 anglers on a morning as day trip take 37 Yellowtail.

I will begin to the south and work on up as there are albacore to be had the Inner Bank area. I did not hear anyone fishing there today but on the weekend there were good reports coming from this area as well as the Upper 500 Bank. Captain Jay Bush of the 6 pack charter yacht "Stimulator" went down to investigate the area on Sunday and had good action fishing around the Inner Bank down around 165 degrees 65 to 85 miles from Point Loma. Jay said they had several stops where the fish really same to the boat well. He had a group of five angles and four of them had never fished before. They caught 18 Albies. Jay said an experienced group could have had a 50 or 60 fish day.

I also got a call from private boater Allan Barrett who fish out of the hotel Coral on the weekend and he reported 22 Albacore on Sunday fishing 21 to 24 miles 240 to 260 degrees from the Coral which would have you working an area 43 to 65 miles about 164 degrees from Point Lorna. Add that to what Jay Bush reported and you see a spread of fish from 43 to 65 miles from Point Loma on a 164 to 165 degree heading.

Also productive in the region was the Upper 500 Bank working down around 55 miles, 182 degrees from Point Loma.

Between the Butterfly Bank and the Mushroom Bank there were some nice size Bluefin to 80 Ibs or so biting out this way today. There was a wide spread to the fish again today with stops scattered over a big area spread from about 60 to 86 miles 218 to 248 degrees from Point Loma. Best advice I can give is to work the edges of the Banks in these areas A good stop was reported outside the Butterfly at Latitude and Longitude coordinates 3220 and 11820 which puts you out around 59 miles 239 degrees from Point Loma. Also check the area of 3206 and 11819 at 64 miles 226 degrees from Point Loma as well as 3210 and 11828 at 69 miles 232 degrees from Point Loma as well as 3156 and 11818 at 70 miles 219 degrees from Point Loma. A bit further outside check the region of coordinates 3158 and 11843 at 85 miles 229 degrees from Point Loma, 3200 and 11817 at 67 miles, 232 degrees from Point Loma. There was also good action reported in the region of 3211 and 11822 which is 66 miles, 232 degrees from Point Loma. Boats fishing a bit further outside reported a 20 mile area of steady action working between Coordinates 3154 and 11819 at 71 miles 218 degrees from Point Loma.

Even further outside, the area of the Worm Bank has been very good. Look in the area between the Worm Bank and the 439 Spot working between coordinates 3158 and 11847 at 89 miles, 230 degrees from Point Loma and 3155 and 11852 at 95 miles, 229 degrees from Point Loma. Also check a short way to the northwest of the Worm bank in the region of coordinates 3202 and 11902 around 100 miles, 236 degrees from Point Loma.

Up around San Clemente Island the bite has had the tendency to be a little bit hit or miss with some real good stops to be had it you are fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. The early mornings see a bit of a bite with there often being a real slow period during the day and it seems the time of day when the fish come up and bite best is during the late afternoon and evening hours. There been some fish around the 289 spot into the northeast of Pyramid Head but the better area has been working southwest to south of Pyramid 4 to 12 miles off the Island. Some coordinates where fish have been biting is in the region 3238 and 11827 which puts you out about 62 miles, 256 degrees from Point Loma. Also check the area of 3244 and 11811 at 49 miles 263 degrees from Point Loma as well as 3241 and 11820 at 57 miles, 259 degrees from Point Lorna

There have also been AIbies scattered from that area close to San Clemente Island on down into the waters outside the 43 Fathom spot and the region between the 43 Fathom spot and the 224 was pretty active today. There seem to be occasional hotspots that flare up each day outside the 43 fathom spot working the edges the 1000 fathom trench anywhere from 6 to 10 miles southeast over to southwest of the high spot at the 43. The bite was real good on Sunday for Captain Ron Bowers of the yacht "Salt Fever" who reported 20+ Albacore working the region at Coordinates 3229 and 11756 at 37 miles 242 degrees from Point Loma.

What did sound very good was found by another private boater who reported finding a real good bite for 20+ Albacore in the region of coordinates 3235 and 11750 which puts you out around 32 miles, 249 degrees from Point Loma. This has you working 11 miles, 225 degrees from the 224 Spot. Steve responded that he heard that some other boats working the inside of the Butterfly Bank area didn't have much luck ran inside to this area and did well also.

Most of the Albacore are in 12 to 18 Ib class with reports of more in the past couple of days up in the 25 lb class. They are biting well on Sardines or Anchovies after a trolling strike and some stops you need to use the lighter 16 or 20 lb test to get bit on bait. A 25 lb. test outfit would be a good all around outfit if you were bringing one rod. For the bigger bluefin, an outfit with 40 to 60 lb. test should have you well covered for fish oft this size.

Good bets on the troll are feathers and Rapalas. Good sizes have been CD 11, CD 14 and CD 18. The green Mackerel color and the new Dorado color have been working well. Good color feathers are black and purple, zucchini, green and yellow, root beer and Mexican Flag.

Steve Black also reported today that black and green and blue and white were working well for them, so it seems that they are biting a wide variety of colors. Also try the natural color cedar plugs. When I was out on the "Stimulator" last week, we were also getting bit well on the small spreader bars with the small rubber hooches. And in talking with Captain Mike, "The Beak" Hurt Sunday, he says that the Bluefin have been biting on the fish trap plastics trolled with an egg sinker at around 6 knots.

Today's fishing out of Mission Bay had  Seaforth with 36 anglers on 2 trips catch 122 Albacore.

lslandia had the Dolphin II out with 15 anglers and they caught 55 Albacore.

The Dock total in San Diego had 142 boats with 214 anglers catch 13 Yellowtail, 11 Bluefin and 776 Albacore,

Helgren's in Oceanside had a count that included 19 Albacore and 5 Yellowtail.

This is the time of year when I can ready use your fish reports. They certainly are a big help to me in tracking the fish each day. If you have a coupe of minutes to give me a call you can do so 24 hours a day at (619) 226-8218. There is a recorder line 24 hours a day to take your message if I am not available to do so personally.

Thanks for keeping this in mind.

Marlin

The best Marlin fishing remains in the lee of San Clemente Island as boats are finding some fish scattered from the Radar Dome on up to Northwest Harbor while fishing 2 to 4 miles off of the Island. The bite was red hot just a few days back but it has slowed a bit over the past three days. Today there were three tournaments fishing the region and there were 4 or 5 marlin caught combined for the three tournaments.

I spoke with Bob Woodard of the Christina Lynn who was fishing the lee of San Clemente Island today. Bob reported at there was action scattered from just below the radar Dome on up to Northwest harbor for boats fishing 2 to 4 miles off the island. Bob reported that there were just a few fish showing off and on throughout the day. The Bob reported that the first date of the Marlin club’s I.L.T.T. Tournament saw one marlin taken and 2 lost hookups. The best area was reported to be 2 to 4 Miles off the radar dome. There have been some jigs strikes but the majority of the fish have been caught when baiting feeders and tailers and on the drop back mackerel.

Water conditions were reported to be excellent at 69 1/2 and blue.

There has not been much to report from other areas. There was a marlin hooked from a tuna stop at the 302 spot on Thursday and an occasional Marlin reported seen from time to time six to 8 miles off La Jolla and 6 to 8 miles off of San Onofre. A few Marlin are reported around the 277 and the 152 off the east end of Catalina and there is an occasional fish reported around the slide as well.

In the San Diego area mackerel have been available to catch for bait outside the Imperial Beach Pier. Also look for mackerel just above the Mission Bay Jetties as well as outside the Crystal Pier at Pacific Beach as well as outside the Scripps Pier at La Jolla. A couple of the better color jigs have been black and purple and the green and white mackerel color.

The weather was rough and sloppy in a lot of areas today with a South wind blowing but the report from the lee of San Clemente Island is that it was pleasant there with some rain.... As always be sure to check the latest green weather forecast before you go.
